Interior design is now a lucrative and far-reaching – some might argue, bloated – industry. The import and export of styles is big business, top designers such as Kelly Hoppen and India Hicks have achieved filmstar status (one or two others the dubious fame of fraudsters) and then there’s the lucrative spin-off culture of books, magazines and reality television shows. Its emphasis, however, has so far rested almost exclusively on the visual.

The studio where Noah and the Whale recorded their new album isn't your typical recording space. A converted Methodist chapel in Bethnal Green, its warm atmosphere and favourable acoustics have also led to its hosting Guillemots, Mystery Jets and Arctic Monkeys.

Offered in 88, 73 and 61-key versions, Kronos was one of the most talked-about products at the show. It features nine synth engines of various types and can switch sounds seamlessly (or instantaneously) while being played, thanks to its Virtual Memory Technology and a fast Solid State Disk, even from huge 4GB acoustic piano samples.
